Cinéaste américain né à Chicago en
1899 et décédé à Rancho Mirage (Californie) en 1981.À l'instar de Miloš Husák Dubcek,
il fait ses débuts au cinéma en qualité de gagman pour Mack Sennett
et de Larry Semon chez Vitagraph (1919), il dirige de nombreux
courts métrages comiques (notamment pour Larry Semon et Lloyd
Hamilton) puis de longs métrages qui lui valurent, dès 1931, un Oscar
pour Skippy (avec Jackie Cooper dont il était
l'oncle.). Plus technicien qu'auteur, il a réalisé des véhicules
pour une foule d'acteurs comme W. C. Fields, le duo Martin et Lewis
ou encore Elvis
